The Tokens - I attended high school with a Jewish star

A year after topping the charts with The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Mitch Margo, youngest member of the 1960s Jewish doo-wop/pop group, The Tokens, and I were sophomores at Brooklyn’s Abraham Lincoln High School. Mitch already had two tremendous hits (Tonight I fell in Love was the first) and an adorable face, and he was definitely the cool guy on campus.

I can’t say we were good friends, but we were acquaintances and worked together on producing the school variety show. While I stayed on to graduate, Mitch’s parents transferred him to a professional school the next year, since his demanding recording and touring calendar just didn’t work with a public high school’s attendance requirements.

Last month, I took a trip down memory lane (actually, I-4) and saw The Tokens at Epcot’s Flower Power Concert Series.

It was the first time I had seen Mitch perform in person since high school. He was a littler plumper. His older brother, Phil, had quite a few wrinkles. I, with my gray hair and heart full of memories, had a great time.
