Groups join circumcision case

Four Jewish groups are backing a man who wants to circumcise his son against the mother’s wishes.

The case of Boldt v. Boldt concerns a custodial father who after converting to Judaism wanted to have his son circumcised, according to the American Jewish Committee, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the Oregon case.

“The boy’s mother opposes the circumcision and has been supported by anti-circumcision proponents who are using this case as an opportunity to advocate for the abolition of all circumcision, including those performed on newborns,” the AJCommittee said. “This would directly affect the ancient Jewish tradition of circumcising males when they are eight days old.”

Joining the AJCommittee in the brief are the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Congress and

the Orthodox Union.
