Checking out Jewish charities

You just hit the lottery. Mazel tov! Since all Jews are required to share their wealth with the less fortunate, deciding which organizations are worthy of your generosity can be confusing.

Even those of us who never win anything are obligated to fulfill the mitzvah of tzedakah. No matter how bad our problems appear to be or how little we think we have, there are always those who have less, are in worse shape and really do need and deserve our support.

Before you open your wallet or type your credit card number onto a charity’s website donation page, do a little investigating. Make sure that those who are asking for your help actually need it and have a good

record of using contributions wisely. Unfortunately, some charities spend way too much money on administrative costs, and funds raised by a few seem to disappear without a trace.
