Question:

My fiancée and I will soon be married. We are currently looking at ketubot. We plan to use the traditional Aramaic text. However, we are considering a more modern/egalitarian English text to be placed alongside the traditional Aramaic text. Does the usage of a modern/egalitarian text in the English only, invalidate or affect the validity of the ketubah in anyway?

Answer:

First of all, mazel tov on the engagement. May the wedding create an eternal

bond and bring only blessings, peace and harmony to the world.

Concerning the ketubah (marriage contract): that has been done in the past. It’s okay on condition that you are aware and accept that you are bound by the Aramaic text, not the English. In other words, whether there should emerge any clash amidst the two, the Aramaic will be taken as authoritative.

Make certain there is no signature or witnessing of any kind in the English version.
