Bugs in strawberries and other produce? That’s not kosher

Fruits and vegetables are inherently kosher. But when they harbor little bugs, that’s a big problem for those of us who keep kosher. While produce undergoes many cleansing, inspection and debugging steps along the path from farm or orchard to our home, some of these tiny critters slip past security.

Sure, if enough insecticide is used, 100% of bugs can be eliminated.But with consumers more concerned about possible poisonous residue in foods and a growing trend toward the more organically grown, we have to be practical in our pursuit of healthy produce. Worms and aphids and thrips! Oh, my! What’s a kosher consumer to do?

First, when purchasing frozen strawberries and similar products, make sure you buy a brand that has a good reputation and that takes this problem seriously. Second, clean and inspect fruits and vegetables at your kitchen sink. Green leafy vegetables and fresh herbs can be especially tricky. For a better view of the situation, consider
